This half term we are learning about the Victorians. Can you complete a Victorian money challenge using the information you have been given?

Bronze: The chimney sweep has earned 4 Silver Sixpence for his day’s work. How much has he earned in total? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Silver: In my purse, I have 3 sovereigns and 2 florins. How much money do I have? Explain how you worked out your answer.

Gold: Which amount of money is higher? 10 shillings or 3 Guinea? Explain how you know.

Platinum: Try to find out what one Pound would buy in Victorian times, and compare to what one Pound would buy today? Is a Pound worth the same now as then? Find out what a loaf of bread would cost then and now.

    Gold: 10 shillings is 15p, meaning that it is MUCH bigger than 3 Guinea, which is about 0.00024 Pounds total, which is about 0.0000024 pence. So shillings are much bigger than 3 Guinea!

      Gold: 10 shillings is 15p, meaning 3 Guinea is much bigger, since a guinea is just above 1 pound, about 1 pound one shilling, it would be 3 pounds and 3 shillings. While 10 shillings is just 15p. So a guinea is much more expensive.

    The chimney sweep earned 24p and I know this because 4 x 6 = 24.

    Silver:
    The answer is 3.48. I know this because
    a souvenir is one pound and a florin is 2 shillings.So if you do 1×3 it is 3 and if you do 2×2 it is 4.

    Gold:
    The answer is 3 guinea and I know this because a Guinea is 21 shillings and a shilling equals 12 pence and 12 x 21 = 252 pence.

    Platinum:
    With one pound in the Victorian Times, you could buy some loafs of bread. For things the Victorian times, it would cost
    100 pound for paying taxes,a maid for 24 ,washing for 26 pound and coal for a whole month would be 12 pound.

    The Chimney sweep earned £24 I know this because 4 x 6 = 24 pence.
    Silver: In my purse, I have 3 sovereigns and 2 florins. How much money do I have? Explain how you worked out your answer.
    The answer would be £3.48 I know this because 1 sovereign is a pound. Three sovereigns are equal to £3 and 1 florin equals 2 shillings so 2 florins must equal 4 shillings. 1-shilling equals 12 pence. So 4 shillings are 48 pence.
    Gold: Which amount of money is higher? 10 shillings or 3 Guinea? Explain how you know.
    3 Guinea is higher than 10 shillings.
    I know this because a Guinea is 21 shilling a shilling equals 12 pence and 12 x 21 = 252 pence.
    10 shillings are 120 pence.
    Platinum: Try to find out what one Pound would buy in Victorian times, and compare to what one Pound would buy today? Is a Pound worth the same now as then? Find out what a loaf of bread would cost then and now.
    We would use a pound to buy some food. A pound today only buys 0.70% of what it could buy back then. Nowadays, loaf can cost £1. In Victorian times, £1 can buy 142 loafs, that is less than 1p for a loaf.
    Here are some things that would cost in the Victorian times:
    Rent and taxes = £100
    2 maids = £42
    Food and cleaning materials (for four people) = £104
    Washing = £26
    Coal (1month) = £12
    Electric light = £18
    Wine = £10
    Dress (x2) = £80

    You have £3.24p
    I know this because a sovereign is equivalent to 1 pound and you have three of them so that is three pound and one florin is equivalent to a shilling and a shilling is worth 12p but you have two florins so you have 24p.

    6×4=24 so its £24.00

    1 florin=2 shillings
    2florin= 4 shilling so
    1 shilling= 12 pence and
    4×12=48 p

    120p=£1.20
    1 guinea=21 shilling
    3×21=63 shilling
    63×3=189p

    They will get 24 pence I know this because 1 Silver Sixpence is 6 pence so 4 Silver Sixpence is 24 pence.

    You will have 3.04 pounds. I know this because 3 sovereign is 3 pounds and 2 florins is 4 pence when you add them together you get the answer of 3.04 pounds.

    Gold: Which amount of money is higher? 10 shillings or 3 Guinea? Explain how you know.
    10 Shillings = 120p
    3 Guinea = 756p
    3 Guinea is a higher amount than 10 shillings.
