The Amazon River is located in South America. It runs through Guyana, Ecuador, Venezuela, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru.
The length of the Amazon River is approximately 6400 kilometres (4000 miles).
During the wet season, the Amazon River can reach over 190 kilometres (120 miles) in width.
There are no bridges that cross the Amazon, mostly because there is no need, the majority of the Amazon River runs through rainforests rather than roads or cities.
The largest city along the Amazon River is Manaus. Located in Brazil it is home to over 1.7 million people.
There are over 3000 known species of fish that live in the Amazon River, with more constantly being discovered.
Anacondas lurk in the shallow waters of the Amazon Basin, they are one of the largest snakes in the world and occasionally attack larger animals such as goats that get to close the water.
The Amazon River is also home to the piranha, a meat eating type of fish! Being carnivores, piranhas are known to attack in groups, preying on livestock that strays into the water and possibly appearing in one or two of your own nightmares!

Platinum: The Amazon is the world’s biggest rainforest, larger than the next two largest rainforests — in the Congo Basin and Indonesia — combined. At 6.9 million square kilometers (2.72 million square miles), the Amazon Basin is roughly the size of the forty-eight contiguous United States and covers some 40 percent of the South American continent. The “Amazon rainforest” — which defined biogeographically includes the rainforest in the Guianas, which technically are outside the Amazon Basin — covers 7.8-8.2 million square km (3-3.2 million square mi), of which just over 80 percent is forested. The Amazon River is by far the world’s largest river by volume, carrying more than five times the volume of the Congo or twelve times that of the Mississippi. It drains an area nearly the size of the forty-eight contiguous United States and has over 1,100 tributaries, 17 of which are longer than 1000 miles. The Amazon River once flowed west-ward instead of east-ward as it does today. The rise of the Andes caused it to flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The Amazon is estimated to have 16,000 tree species and 390 billion individual trees.Nearly two-thirds of the Amazon rainforest is found in Brazil. The Amazon is thought to have 2.5 million species of insects. More than half the species in the Amazon rainforest are thought to live in the canopy.70 percent of South America’s GDP is produced in areas that receive rainfall or water from the Amazon. The Amazon influences rainfall patterns as far away as the United States.Cattle ranching accounts for roughly 70 percent of deforestation in the Amazon.Deforestation in the Amazon rainforest was on a downward trend from 2004 to 2012, mostly due to the falling deforestation rate in Brazil. There are a variety of reasons for the decline, including macroeconomic trends, new protected areas and indigenous territories, improved law enforcement, deforestation monitoring via satellite, pressure from environmental groups, and private sector initiatives. But that trend has reversed since 2013, with deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon in 2021 reaching the highest level since 2008.

    2. Temperate – in the temperate zone further away from the Equator.
Which rainforests are nearer to the equator – temperate or tropical?

What percentage of natural medicines can be found in the rainforest?
25% of natural medicines have been found in the rainforest.

Why are there no rainforests in Antarctica? Explain.
Because it is to cold for trees and animals to survive.
How do animals communicate when they cannot see one another?
Animals that live in the canopy have to use loud calls to communicate because they cannot see each other in the thick leaves and some jump from tree to tree.
Why has the author written the word ‘damp’ in brackets in the ‘Forest Floor’ section?
The Author has written the word ‘damp’ because humid and damp are synonyms but damp is a much easier to understand word.
    GOLD

    MY Amazon Rainforest fact file
    Bullets points
    • There are 2500 species of fishes
    • There are 1500 species of birds in the amazon rainforest
    • There are 1800 species of butterflies
    • There are 4 types of cats in the amazon rainforest
    • There are 200 species of mosquitos
    • There are 50,000 of higher plants.

Fun fact – There are so many birds in the amazon rainforest that it takes up a third of the birds population in the world with the toucan being the most popular icon.

Approximately 2700 acres of the Amazonian rainforest are burnt to ash every year
Due to this experts estimate that we are losing about 137 species of plants animals and insect species every single day because of deforestation of the rainforest and that makes about 50000 species lost a year this also gets rid of lots of medicines for dangerous diseases.

This climate is warm and humid with an average temperature of 79 degrees and an average yearly rainfall of 80 inches. The Temperature difference between the day and night may even be larger than the temperature between seasons.
