A lighthouse is a tall building with a light at the top. It is built on the coast to help ships see where they are and to avoid running into rocks or the shore. The light in a lighthouse is very bright and can be seen from far away.

According to Homeric legend, Palamedes of Nafplio invented the first lighthouse, although they are certainly attested with the Lighthouse of Alexandria and the Colossus of Rhodes.

The first lighthouse was built in Alexandria, Egypt, around 280 BC. It was called the Pharos of Alexandria and was one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. The Pharos was about 450 feet tall and had a fire at the top that could be seen for miles around.

Lighthouses can be different heights, but they are usually tall so that the light can be seen from far away. The tallest lighthouse in the world is the Jeddah Light in Saudi Arabia, which is 426 feet tall.
