Here is your Autumn 2 Maths challenge. Try your best and remember prizes are given out for great effort and work. Show your working out for each question you try. Challenge: use a diagram to explain.

Bronze

In a school in New York, there are 8 classrooms. Each classroom has 6 rows of desks, and there are 5 desks in each row. How many desks are there in total in the school?

Bonus question: If each desk has 4 books, how many books are there in total on all the desks?

Silver

A farmer in California has 12 apple orchards. Each orchard has 15 trees, and each tree produces 48 apples every year.

How many apples does the farmer’s orchards produce in total each year?

Bonus question: If the farmer packs the apples into boxes, and each box holds 24 apples, how many boxes does the farmer need for all the apples?

Gold

There are 25 basketball teams in a junior league in Texas. Each team has 12 players. If each player gets 3 new basketballs for the season, how many basketballs are needed in total for all the players?

Bonus question: If each basketball costs $20, how much would it cost to buy all the basketballs for the league?

Platinum

A school in Florida is organizing a field trip to the Kennedy Space Center. There are 27 buses, and each bus can hold 48 students. If each student’s ticket costs $35, how much money is needed to buy tickets for all the students on the trip?

Bonus question: If each bus also needs 2 teachers to supervise, how many people (students and teachers) are going on the trip in total?

    Answer: 240 .I know this because if there are eight classrooms and each class room has six rows of desks soo we need to multiply eight by six and the answer to that is 48 and the question also says that there are 5 desks in each row so now we multiply 48 by 5 and the answer to that is 240.

    Question:If each desk has 4 books, how many books are there in total on all the desks?

    Answer: 480 .i know this because the question says that there are FOUR books on each table sooo this means we need to multiply 240 by 4 and the answer to that 480.

    There are 240 desks in 8 classrooms. As there are 6rows and 5 desks in each row so we need to do 6 x 5 = 30 and as there are 8 classrooms then it is 8×30= 240 desks.

    BONUS: As there are 4 books on each desk so total 240×4 gives us 960 books in total.

    SILVER:

    The farmer produces 720 apples from 15 trees, as 15×48 = 720. As there are 12 orchard’s I have to do 720×12 = 8640 apples in total each year.

    BONUS:

    As there are 8640 apples in total and each box hold 24 apples I have to do 8640/24=360 boxes.

    GOLD:

    As there are 25 basketball teams and 12 players in each team I have to do 25×12 =300players in 25 basketball teams. We need 900 basketballs for 300 players because 300×3 = 900.

    BONUS: It would cost you $8000 to buy 900 basketballs for the league because 900×20 = 8000.

    PLATINUM:

    They have 1296 students in total. I know this because 27×48=1296. Now, as each ticket cost $35 so we need to do 1296×35 =$45360 to buy tickets for all students on the trip.

    BONUS: As there are total 27 buses and each bus needs 2 teachers so 27×2 = 54 teachers in total. As there are 1296 students so 1296+54 = 1350 are going to trip in total.

    20 since there are 4 books and 5 desks so the number sentence l did was 4×5 to give the answer of 20

    336 because if there are 24 boxes you have to divide that between how many apples there are and 8064÷24=336.

    100 because if there are 25 basketball teams and 12 players in each team you have to do 25×12 which equals 300 then l did 300 ÷3 Since each player gets 3 new basketballs for the season.

    £2000 since 100 × 20 =2000
    Platinum:
    1680 because if there are 48 students and each ticket costs £35 l did 35×48 which equals 1680.
    Bonus question :
    1350 since there are 48 students so you add 2 since you need 2 teachers to supervise so 50 .There are also 27 buses so l did 27×50 which equals 1350.
