In preparation for Year 4 2024-25

In preparation for Year 4, we would like your child to do the following:

English

Reading
  • Read often throughout the week and have opportunities to discuss an increasingly wide range of fiction, poetry, plays, non-fiction and reference books or textbooks (visit the library where possible). Remember to read out aloud and practice speaking clearly. We have links on our website:
Spelling
  • Spell many of the words from the Year 3 and 4 list and all of the Year 1 & 2 list (see blogs).
  • Practice writing – shopping lists, stories etc. Check our school Handwriting Policy (see website).
Grammar

Compose and rehearse sentences orally before writing. Include conjunctions, subordination, adverbs and prepositions in sentences. Use the ‘games’ on the BH website to do this.

Mathematics

  • Recognise place value of each digit in a three-digit number (hundreds, tens and ones), showing some awareness of thousands.
  • Count from 0 in multiples of 4, 8, 10, 50 and 100; finding 10 or 100 more/less than a given number.
  • Read, write, order and compare numbers to at least 1000 in numerals and words.
  • Recall and use addition and subtraction facts to at least 100 (e.g. 27 +73 = 100; 100 – 27 = 73).
  • Derive and use related facts up to at least 100, working with more complex combinations (e.g. 27 + 37 = 100; 270 + 730 = 1000).
  • Quick recall and use multiplication and division facts for all of the multiplication tables.
  • Recognise and show, using diagrams, equivalent fractions with small denominations to tenths.
  • Identify and name 3-D shapes and their features, including cones, cylinders, prisms, pyramids, cubes, cuboids, spheres.
  • Use Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) to practice your times tables. https://play.ttrockstars.com/auth/school/student/61198

Physical Education

  • Make informed choices to maintain your health and well-being. You can do this by creating an exercise plan using the BH blogs to support.
  • Play games and develop basic skills to improve control and consistency (see blogs).
  • Go on family walks, runs etc.

Creative

  • Keep a diary
    • Reflect on and evaluate your achievements and strengths in all areas of life.

Social

Group work:
  • Look for opportunities to practice group work at home, such as baking a cake together, with one person reading the recipe and the other weighing out the ingredients or collaborating with siblings or friends.
Independence:
  • Do some household jobs (e.g. washing up, dusting, helping with meals).
Concentration:
  • Improve concentration skills by playing family games that involve focusing on the task in hand, such as Connect 4, Scrabble, Shopping list and Chess. Watch the news and know topical issues around the world.
Communication skills:
  • Encourage communication skills by making plenty of time to talk as a family, such as at the dining table. Demonstrate sensitivity and understanding towards others. Make a game to play with your family, friends etc.
