In preparation for Reception 24-25

In preparation for Reception, we would like your child to do the following:

Literacy

Phonics
Reading
  • Support your child to recognise and read their name.
  • Enjoy reading stories with your child and listen to different Nursery Rhymes.
  • Recognise 10 initial sounds.
Writing
  • Hold a pencil to draw and attempt to draw a picture – Encourage talk about what they have drawn.
  • Support your child to learn to write their name.
  • Beginning to form some recognisable letters – Use chalk, paint, pencils, and pencil crayons to practise formation.

Mathematics

Number
  • Recite and count to 10 (or beyond to 20).
  • Count objects, actions and sounds 1 – 5 or 1 – 10.
  • Recognise numbers to 5.
  • Sing a range of different number rhymes and songs.: 5 Speckled Frogs or 5 Little Ducks etc.

Shape and Pattern
  • Recognise and name 4 basic shapes.
  • Help your child to recognise and name shapes in the environment around them.
  • To create patterns using different objects.
  • Identify different colours

Physical Development

  • To encourage your child to dress themselves including putting on shoes and doing them up.
  • Ensure your child can put on their coat and do the zip or buttons up by themselves.
  • Support and encourage your child to use a knife and fork when eating their food.

Personal Social and Emotional Development

Group work
  • Play a game with members of your family and learn to take turns.
Independence
  • Support your child to go to the toilet by themselves and be able to wash their hands without any support.
Concentration
  • Play memory games like ‘Matching Pairs’ with people in your house to develop concentration skills.
Communication skills
  • Look through a book with your child and encourage them to talk about what is happening in the pictures. Support your child to talk about their ideas, needs and feelings.
Wellbeing
  • Encourage your child to eat a variety of healthy fruit and vegetables.
  • Identify foods which are healthy for you to eat and those that are not so healthy.

Be Creative

  • Draw a picture of you and your family.
  • Create a card about yourself using pictures to tell your new teacher your likes and dislikes.
  • Make a rainbow using different art media and identify the colours.
